Learn to Sail at Vallejo Yacht Club

Vallejo Yacht Club invites all aspiring sailors, children or adults, to join our Learn-to-Sail program. This popular program includes various levels of instruction from dinghy to keelboat with all classes conveniently located at the Vallejo Yacht Club. Instructors are experienced sailors who volunteer their time to help keep the cost as low as possible. They are committed to introducing everyone to this exciting sport by emphasizing and encouraging fun and safety on the water.

This winter and spring we have informal classroom instruction and on-water informal sailing and instruction for members on the Club’s Cal-20 fleet. This instruction is free, for members only. On-water informal sailing for members is 1-4pm on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. The next 3–4-hour classroom session is 9am-12pm on February 14.

We will restart a more formal set of classes described below for both members and non-members this Spring and Summer. For these classes, you don’t have to be a member, but we hope you decide to join!

The Boats

Beginning sailors enjoy learning on our Laser Pico sailing dinghies. Fast, fun, and stable, these 11′ rotomolded boats make excellent trainers for beginning and intermediate sailors. Our fleet also includes El Toros and Hunter Club Trainers for beginning sailing skills, and seven 14’ Lasers for the intermediate sailor. Fun on the water awaits at Vallejo Yacht Club.

Before Signing Up

Participants must be age 9 or older and be able to swim 25 yards independently.

What You Bring

  • An enthusiastic and cheerful attitude

  • A hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and kneepads (optional)

  • A change of clothes (expect to get wet)

  • A Type III Personal Floatation Device (PFD)

  • Your own lunch

Class Schedule

We expect to have two summer sessions, one one-week 6-day session and a weekend-only session over three weekends. If we have enough interest, we may schedule another session later in the summer.

Learn to Sail Tuition

Individual Plan: $200

Family Plan: $175 per person (2 or more immediate family)

A few scholarships are available for local Vallejo City Unified School District students grades 5 through 12. Please contact us to inquire about a scholarship.
