Club Racing at Vallejo Yacht Club

The Vallejo Yacht Club has a long history of racing events that goes back 100 years. Monthly races are held throughout the year in addition to Wednesday evening races which are held from April through September. Wednesday evening races start at 6:00 pm and typically last an hour or 2. Wednesday evening races are followed with dinner at the club house. This a relatively low intensity competition and is meant to get members out on the water to enjoy themselves. There are 4 fleets:

  • Fleet A is open to all PHRF ratings and allows the use of spinnakers. This is typically our most competitive fleet.

  • Fleet B is for PHRF ratings of <149 and does not allow for the use of spinnakers.

  • Fleet C is open to PHRF ratings >150 and does not allow for the use of spinnakers. This fleet starts 5 minutes after Fleet A and B and has its own course to sail.

  • Fleet D is designed for sailors new to racing and is open to all boats regardless of PHRF rating, with no spinnakers allowed. D fleet is not officially scored for trophies or awards. This is a good fleet to learn the rules and techniques of racing and just have fun. This fleet starts 5 minutes after Fleet A and B and has its own course to sail.

The club’s monthly races generally start at 12:00 noon on Saturday mornings. These races are typically longer races. There will be at least one race to Angel Island and back, another to Brothers Island and back and a Luna race which starts after dark with a full moon.

All races start at the front of the Club where the start line is defined. This is also the finish line. The race committee conducts the race from the second story race deck. The club has a number of preset racecourses available, which are chosen just prior to the race. All sailors are notified of the course by a course number displayed on the front of the race deck. Each fleet has its own course number displayed.

An annual awards dinner and trophy presentation is held in November of each year.

Looking to crew or looking for crew? We have a list where those captains looking for crew and those sailors looking for a boat to crew on can list their names and history so they can contact one another. On Wednesday nights just come down an hour before the race and ask any boat if they are looking for crew. Many will be happy to have more people on board.
