Chart Reading & Navigation Course

Basic Chart-Reading Class Scheduled for April 10, 2010 at Vallejo Yacht Club

The Carquinez Sail & Power Squadron will be offering a one-day seminar in the basics of chart reading, elementary navigation, electronic charts, and GPS.

This class will introduce the elements of a chart; how to plot a course avoiding underwater hazards using the chart; how to use an electronic chart, and how to match the electronic chart to your GPS unit using waypoints.  We will also touch on using the mariner’s compass to steer the course, dead reckoning, and how to account for steering in current and wind.

The course will last four to five hours, and begins at 1000 in the classroom in the Vallejo Yacht Club, 485 Mare Island Way, Vallejo.  For reservations, or more information, call 707-55BOATS (552-6287).  Cost is $40 per person, and includes lunch.  Be sure to bring any plotting tools you may have; they will be useful.
